The Secret to Making the Clubhouse App Useful

In my opinion, the number one reason why people are not using the Clubhouse app that came out in 2020 is because of the notification system.

Once they've signed up, they get bombarded with, Hey, this person's gone live and this person's talking. And do you want to join this room? And dah, dah, dah, dah. And they quickly go into their notification systems on their phone. If you're like me and you turn off notifications completely for the app, therefore making it totally unusable. And then you forget about it. And then people keep talking about Clubhouse and you feel like you're out of the conversation.

I want to help you solve this problem. This is an issue I had. And so I'm going to show you what I did to solve this. And the very first thing you need to do is fix the notification system. So we're going to do that first.

So let's jump into this first and foremost, go into settings on your phone, go to notifications and you want to turn on notifications for Clubhouse. You're going to have to have that on. So go into Clubhouse and you can customize how the notifications appear on your phone. This is for Android and iOS.

By the way, when this first came out is just for iOS, but it's not anymore. You can get it on the Android phone or platform. Anyway, turn on the notifications the way you want. Once that set, we're going to go into Clubhouse.

So open Clubhouse up. Now, if you first start up Clubhouse, it's going to walk you through things and to get you set up, and it's going to ask you for a ton of interest and it's going to look a lot like this. In fact, you can change it at any time, but you're going to see a screen that kind of looks like this.

I strongly suggest only choosing two or three things that interest you don't choose a ton of things until you're really comfortable with this platform because you're going to get a lot of notifications. And you're going to see a lot of stuff in your hallway, which is kind of like your dashboard of stuff that you don't really care about.

So just choose one or two I've chose music because I produce music and podcasts, which I produce podcasts. I like to know what's going on with that and entrepreneurship because I'm an entrepreneur. Okay?

The next thing I want you to do is you need to set up your profile, set up your profile and make it something that's interesting that people would like to read and want to follow you. This is really important to actually choose some text and copy that actually represents you pretty well.

At the very bottom. It allows you to add your Twitter account and Instagram count. I strongly suggest doing that. In the beginning of this app, you weren't allowed to DM people in the app. You had to go to their Twitter account and DM there or Instagram. You can now do it inside the app, which so it's not quite as important, but I strongly suggest connecting those apps to it as well.

The next thing you want to do is you want to go into your notifications inside the app, and this is most important thing. So this is where my followers are. As you can see right now, I have very few followers, people I'm following. And it's because I don't want a lot of notifications from them. I want this app to be people I actually care about and want to use.

So in this list, you're going to see all the people that you've chosen to follow. Once you've chosen to follow people, go into here and to your followers, and choose how you want to follow them. If it's somebody that you know really well, you can go in and say, you click the little bell button and you can say, I want to always be notified when they go live, because you might really want to know that.

Or you can do too sometimes or never most of your contacts - Even if you love these people, I strongly suggest choosing never, ever, because you will get inundated with notifications. And I want this app to be super useful to you. So go into each person that you are following, not your followers, people you are following and choose how you want to be notified. I only choose two or three people that I always want to be notified about.

If they go live, the rest of them are either never, ever in. Some of them are sometimes. Sometimes I just want to know if that person goes live. I might want to get into the app. This is probably the most important thing you can do before you do anything else in this app is, is figuring out who you want to follow and how you want to get notified.

Now, I want to go over just real quick, the basics of how this app works so that you can use it and you understand it. So the easiest way to get your head around how Clubhouse works is think of the main screen as a hallway. This is going to show you a bunch of rooms that you can go into. And so you might have a room here. That's A, you might have a room here, that's B.

And all these rooms have different speakers. People speaking in it and different people contributing to it. Now you can choose which room you go into and you can leave whenever you want as well.

There are clubs you can join. A club doesn't mean that there's a room actually happening, but they usually have rooms every once in a while going on. So if you're following a club, it'll tell you when they have a room going on, if you're following a person or a contact, it'll let you know, Hey, this person's speaking in this room, do you want to join? If you have a notification.

So it's important to understand the difference between rooms, clubs, and people. And once you get that, it's actually pretty easy. So there's a lot of other details to this app. I don't really want to go into because there's some great YouTube videos out there that already do that. And I'm going to put those links below. So you can just check those out and get to know all the little details.

What I wanted to do is just give you the basis of how this app works so that you can go forward and kind of get the gist of how to use it. Again. The very first thing you want to do is correct your notifications so that your notifications, when you get notified by Clubhouse, it's actually something you're interested in.

Now, if you want to set up your own room, if you want to create a room, you can do that publicly. Or you can do it privately little private rooms that only certain people know about, or you can schedule a meeting, just kind of like you would a zoom call in the videos below. You can see how to do that.

So the final question is, is this something that you should use? Why should you use it? Couldn't we just use Zoom? Absolutely. You could use Zoom. Here's the problem. A lot of people don't get on Zoom because they don't want to be on camera. They're either driving. They're doing housework, they've have somebody in the background. They just got out of the shower, whatever the deal is, they don't want to be on camera and having an app in which you can be part of a conversation and just listen in is really, really cool.

And be able to come into a room and leave the room quietly without making a fuss and causing people to notice is also really an advantage because then you can decide whether or not you want to be part of the conversation after you've listened in for a little bit.

So there's a lot of advantages to using Clubhouse.

The biggest disadvantage to Clubhouse is that it doesn't have the ability to record the whole thing as of today. - this is October 6th, 2021. But here's the thing - they're about to add that feature. Just about to add the feature where you can then record your Clubhouse sessions. And then you can use that as a podcast episode, or you could put it into your class as a special, or use it as a bonus for your course material. So get ready for that.

There are ways to record Clubhouse conversations and rooms, I guess, Clubhouse rooms and conversations already, but you have to use it by plugging into your computer and use external software. And there's some videos and I'll put those below on how to do that, if that interests you.

i love this app. I think there's a lot of advantages to using Clubhouse. Again, you don't have to be on video. You can come in anytime you want. It's an audio conversation. It's a great way to network. It's a way to be part of the overall conversation on interests and technology that you might be interested in. And it's a great way to teach other people.
